In mid-October, the ScrippsHoward newspaper published a report detailing the espionage which has been conducted by the Ohio Highway Patrol on state, county and municipal officials. It seems that police chiefs, sheriffs, district captains and assorted others of constabulary status occasionally participate in activities which have salacious flavoring to them. It's nothing serious, you understand. It appears that the Ohio Highway Patrol is astutely prescient regarding the probable concupiscence of these officials, and has the serendipious good fortune to frequently be witness to such lawless transgressions. The patrol complies monthly reports that include "accounts of sexual escapades and tidbits about personal habits" of these hapless honkies. Needless to say these dossiers have purposes, but we'll not speculate why it is important for the Ohio Highway Patrol to know that "a certain officer supposedly was sleeping with someone else's wife."

The article reminded us of last year's Time Magazine review of the biography of Bishop James A. Pike, who according to Time was America's "most controversial 20th century clergyman." The good bishop had the

man succumbs. The authors of his biography, William Stringfellow and Anthony Towne report that the bishop had one "homosexual experience while he was a lonely law student at Yale...He hadn't found the experience unpleasant or distasteful 'It was just that the way it shoud;" he said. But Dad opted for a life of connubial bliss, and bliss, and bliss. After divorcing his first wife, he remarried but "slept with various women during his second marriage, even installing a private line through which they could phone him." One of his mistresses during his lessthan-monogamous liaison was one Maren Bergrud, who was supported during their threeyear relationship by Pike's "bishop's discretionary funds." vexing problems of her relationship with 55 sleeping pills. She theatrically informed her lover that she was dying and this solicitious turkey "rushed her to her own nearby apartment, called a doctor who could not save her, and removed the part of the suicide note addressed to himself, later giving it to his third wife: a) I am unlovable and b) you are unloving...Maren."

These reports would not deserve special comment were they isolated incidents in an otherwise law-abiding clergy and constabulary. But the newspapers are replete with numerous accounts of selfserving, law-breaking behavior on the part of those delegated to enforce the "laws of God" and the laws of man, and how they have been less than faithful to their obligation.

Over the centuries gays have been the objects of threatening and persecutive attempts from both these camps and the torture and torment they endured both physical and mental would take volumes to recount. When legal or religious laws are found to be inconvenient, "lawabiding" heterosexuals simply choose to ignore them.
